E-waste poisons water resources

E-waste contains hazardous and toxic metals such as chromium, lead, mercury, and copper, which leach into the soil from landfills and contaminate groundwater sources. Some of these toxins dissolve into rainwater, which then flows into freshwater bodies, such as ponds, rivers, and lakes.

This heavy metal contamination over long-term renders groundwater and freshwater useless for drinking, irrigation, and other purposes.

E-waste contaminates the air with heavy metals

80 percent of e-waste from developed countries, intended for recycling, is illegally shipped to developing countries. where it's either dismantled, shredded, or incinerated.

These practices release particulate matter and heavy metals, such as copper, lead, zinc, nickel, and chromium into the air, causing severe air pollution, and leading to long-term health effects for the local residents of the city.

E-waste can lead to soil contamination and degradation

Improper disposal of e-waste in landfills can cause long-term damage to the surrounding soil, as it releases heavy metals, flame retardants, and other toxic chemicals. Similarly, in cases of incineration and shredding, large particles are released, which are then re-deposited and absorbed by the soil.

These toxic substances can contaminate the soil to the point that it becomes completely useless for agriculture. In addition to this, they destroy existing crops and harm microorganisms residing in the soil's various layers.

Workers responsible for recovering valuable metals from e-waste, such as gold and copper, are at risk of exposure to more than 1000 toxic substances. This can lead to severe health issues, including skeletal, heart, brain, kidney, and liver damage.

Additionally, if an expectant mother comes into contact with the toxins associated with improper handling of e-waste, her unborn child may face health and developmental consequences for the rest of their life. These health issues may range from lung, respiratory, and thyroid problems to neurological and chronic diseases.
